The Curves story

Gary Heavin and his wife Diane opened the first Curves in the United States in 1992. This new, 30-minute fitness concept combined strength training and sustained cardiovascular activity through safe and effective hydraulic resistance. The comfortable, supportive environment was designed for women and was immediately successful. Gary had recognized a need and an opportunity to help prevent deteriorating health and potential illness by caring for people through proper fitness.

Diane had a passion for exercise and the experience of an advertising executive. Together, they realized that women across the world would benefit from the Curves program. They began to develop plans for franchising the concept, with the first club opening in 1995.

Curves has made exercise available to over 4 million women around the world, many of whom are in the gym for the first time. With 5,000 locations in more than 80 countries, The fact that this phenomenal growth has been realized almost entirely through the positive word-of-mouth from Curves members is a true tribute to the value the program provides.

The workout

The Curves workout combines strength training with cardio activity and stretching – all in just 30 minutes – to create lean muscle, raise your metabolism, burn more fat and tone your body. It is safe, efficient and effective for women of all ages and fitness levels, and you’ll be exercising in an environment that’s comfortable and welcoming. By getting stronger, increasing your flexibility and working to prevent injury, you are setting the stage for your healthier, more active future.

The circuit

The Curves programme includes all five components of a complete workout – warm-up, strength training, cardiovascular training, cool-down and stretching – just in 30 minutes. You change stations every 30 seconds, allowing you to recover and work out different muscle groups.

You’ll work every major muscle group while keeping your heart rate within your target training zone. And with a circuit coach to teach and motivate you at every workout, you are sure to reach your fitness goals in no time. Whether you want to gain energy, tone up or lose weight, the Curves circuit will work for you.

Studies show that regular physical activity, such as the three-day-a-week Curves programme, substantially reduces the risk of conditions including coronary heart disease, stroke, colon cancer, Type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis and high blood pressure. It also helps to control weight; contributes to healthy bones, muscles and joints; helps to relieve the pain of arthritis; and reduces the symptoms of anxiety and depression.

The equipment

The machines are manufactured specifically for Curves and are designed for safety, simplicity and effectiveness, automatically adjusting to every fitness level. The equipment provides the benefits of cardiovascular exercise and weight training with the safe movement of hydraulic resistance, giving an effective workout while protecting bones and joints.
